DeKalb Moves Forward on Growth Summit

November 21, 2002 - The City of DeKalb moved forward on its plans for a growth summit at the City Council workshop session held Monday, November 18th. The initiative, led by Mayor Greg Sparrow, will invite members of the City of DeKalb, Northern Illinois University, the DeKalb School District, the DeKalb Park District, the DeKalb Sanitary District, the Town of Cortland, the Village of Malta and the DeKalb County Regional Planning Commission. It has been suggested that, at some point, some citizens may be appointed to the committee. All meetings will be open to the public.

The purpose of the growth summit, as outlined by Mayor Sparrow, will be to decide how much the community can and wants to grow. Once that is determined the next step is to decide the rate of growth.

Sparrow believes the process could take from 6-8 months to complete. DeKalb's Comprehensive Plan, in the process of being updated, is unlikely to be approved before the growth summit is finished.

The DeKalb Sanitary District will serve as the focal point of determining factors for or against growth. The capacity of the sanitary system will set the level of growth the community can handle.

The first meeting of the growth summit will take place in early December. Two members of each of the governmental units listed above will be invited to participate. All governmental units invited, except Cortland and Malta, have expressed a willingness to participate. There has not been a response from Malta or Cortland officials. Fifth ward alderman, Pat Conboy, will serve with Mayor Sparrow on the summit committee.
